Managing Director, NutriCare
Dr. Ken Gunsalu is an agribusiness and food systems specialist, nutrition expert, and social entrepreneur with over 12 years of experience designing and implementing market-driven agricultural development, agribusiness, nutrition, and climate resilience programmes across Malawi and sub-Saharan Africa. He is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of NutriCare Consultants, a multi-award-winning agribusiness and food systems advisory firm dedicated to improving food security, nutrition, enterprise development, and sustainable livelihoods.
Dr. Gunsalu has led high-impact initiatives with governments, development partners, research institutions, and the private sector in areas including agribusiness development, market systems strengthening, food safety, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, digital innovation, climate-smart agriculture, and social and behavior change communication (SBCC). His work focuses on supporting farmer organizations, SMEs, cooperatives, and agrifood enterprises to become investment-ready, competitive, and resilient.
He currently serves as a project team lead for the digital transformation of municipal market revenue systems in partnership with ICLEI Africa and Lilongwe City Council and as a food safety and agrifood systems consultant under the Ireland–Malawi Agri-Food Systems Programme (IMAGRI), where he supports food safety compliance, export readiness, and enterprise competitiveness. These roles are reflected in his current CV.
Dr. Gunsalu holds a PhD in agribusiness and community development, an MSc in climate change and public health management, and a bachelor's degree in nutrition and food science. He is the recipient of the 2025 National Innovation Champion (Malawi) award by NCA–DCA and the 2025 Africa Continental Innovation Excellence Champion award by African Food Changemakers.
As AFC Country Representative for Malawi, Dr. Gunsalu is committed to fostering partnerships, supporting agripreneurs, strengthening national and regional agrifood networks, and promoting innovative, climate-resilient, and nutrition-sensitive food systems that create opportunities for young people, women, and farming communities across Africa.
